Leah Verier-Dunn Joins SRQ Dance, Inc.

100_4003_2
Leah Verier-Dunn is a dancer, choreographer, yoga teacher, and fine arts groupie. Her addiction to movement began as a girl who couldn't sit still, took her to Booker High School, and grew into a Bachelor of Fine Arts from New World School of the Arts in 2006. In 2007 Leah became co-director of Moving Ethos, a local modern based dance company. Leah spent a year in New York City working with Keigwin and Company and Adele Myers and Dancers, and taught dance classes at Peridance Center. Leah has also been very blessed to work with choreographers such as Robert Battle, Mark Haim, Bill Doolin and others. She spent two season's with Freddick Bratcher and Company in Miami. Her work has been featured in various festivals throughout Florida. Leah's movement combines the technical with the unexpected and plays with the challenge of transitioning seamlessly from one dynamic to the next with complete efficiency. The work of both herself and Moving Ethos is dedicated to bringing the arts back into our community on a local and global level.

“Feel Good Fitness”!

FROM FAD TO RAD

You many have heard the saying, “every trend comes full circle.” In this case, those words can be taken literally. What once was a fad of the 50's is now considered one of the hottest sensations sweeping the nation... from night clubs and parties to fitness centers, dance studios and more!

It's about self expression, movement, excitement and fun. Here, the circle is our way of life. In fact, we love circles so much that we've added a couple more to the word 'hoola.' We've also made ours bigger and better. Reason being, the hoop moves slower when it's bigger. This enables the hooper to have more control over his or her body movements. These certainly aren't the plastic toys you might remember from childhood. We're talking adult-sized, hand-made hoops that enable you to work up a sweat and groove to your favorite music.

HOOPING BENEFITS

-Provides a sweat-drenching cardio workout
-Guaranteed to make you smile and laugh
-Strengthens ab muscles
-Enhances creativity
-Tones arms, legs and thighs
-Builds confidence
-Enables you to push your limits
-Assists with coordination and balance
-Relieves stress
-ALWAYS an ice breaker/ conversation starter

This 6-Week Course is limited to 10 guests. If we have enough interest, we will open a second class! Register Today!!!

"All That Jazz: An Evening with Gary Flannery" Returns Monday, August 4th!!!

GaryFlannery by Jack Mitchell
The summer keeps getting hotter at SRQ Dance, Inc.! Join Bob Fosse dancer, Gary Flannery, for an inspiring class in musical theater on Monday, August 4th from 6:30pm-9:30pm. Mr. Flannery, featured in Fosse’s masterpiece “All That Jazz,” is one of three people in the world permitted to teach the original Bob Fosse repertory. Mr. Flannery currently serves as part of the SRQ Dance, Inc. Adjunct Faculty, visiting us throughout the year in between his busy teaching and directing schedule. Come share in the magic of this inspiring and lifelong dancer/teacher! RSVP Now!!!

Gary Flannery’s career in dance and theatre spanning 52 years has taken him from his Bucks County, Pennsylvania roots to Broadway and 5 million miles of World Tours with the likes of Shirley MacLaine and Bob Fosse. A Balanchine and Juilliard scholarship winner, Gary danced with the Harkness Ballet and was featured on Broadway in “Pippin” and “Dancin” with Fosse, taking both shows on their 1st tours, and was a featured principal dancer in the unforgettable movie “All That Jazz!” Dozens of musicals and concert dance performances round out his impressive resume.

Gary toured the world with Shirley MacLaine also performing in her 3 TV specials, and worked in Hollywood with Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Burnett to name just a few. His greatest compliment came from Fred Astaire who, after seeing Gary in 13 of 17 numbers in “Dancin” in 1978, called it “One of the greatest dance performances he had ever seen!”

Gary Flannery is still happily married with 2 grown children, and has taught on full-time faculty and directed and choreographed for over 30 years, including positions at UCF Conservatory, Northwestern, Northern Illinois, the University of the Arts, and Steps on Broadway. Gary’s move, with his lovely wife Deborah, to his 1924 Bungalow in Abingdon, Virginia, also brings with him his soon to be released book and documentary on forgotten impresario George White and his “Scandals,” a massive 22 year project. Check out his website at georgewhitesscandals.com. Bob Fosse called Gary “The BULL!” Nuff said!

SRQ Summer Arts Camp Session 1: Into The Woods, Jr.

Dance Studio Has Big Plans For Summer And Fall

SARASOTA -- Usually a June recital marks the end of the season for a dance studio. But for SRQ Dance, Inc., it marks only the beginning of a series of exciting new ventures they have planned for this summer and fall.

The studio will continue a lighter recreational dance schedule in the late afternoons and evenings during the summer months for students wishing to dance once a week, but focus primarily on its professional training program for intensive dance studies as well as two summer arts camps for students ages 5-17, who will perform kid friendly versions of "Into The Woods" and "Once On This Island" at the end of each four week session.

Cory Boyas, owner and director of SRQ Dance, Inc., is very excited about the upcoming projects. "It was important to us when selecting our summer theater pieces that they not be gimmicky or mainstream. Both of these shows have an important message that will stay with our students long after the curtain closes."

Summer dance intensives will also feature special guest teachers. "We've had a tremendous response," Boyas adds. "We have students coming to train with us professionally this summer from London, Germany, New York, Los Angeles, and everywhere in between. It's a testament to the kinds of programs we are offering that you won't find anywhere else in Sarasota. In fact, our most recent guest teacher is filming now for Season 2 of MTV's 'America's Next Dance Crew.' and original Bob Fosse dancer, Gary Flannery, is part of our adjunct faculty and holds classes with us regularly. He's one of three people in the world who is permitted to teach the original Fosse repertory. You won't find that at any other studio in the state of Florida." Students dance anywhere from four to fourteen hours per week, depending on age and skill level.

SRQ Dance, Inc.'s children's dance program will also receive a makeover this summer. "We are hard at work on a brand new dance syllabus for children ages 3-7 unlike anything currently on the market. It's simple and cohesive and makes training teachers in our methods much simpler. We plan to implement it this summer at SRQ and fine tune it before licensing it worldwide this fall." Boyas has already received inquiries from California and Southeast Asia in regards to the licensing of the new syllabus.

Students of Julie Rohr Academy will also enjoy SRQ Dance, Inc.'s facilities and dance training this fall when they begin offering complimentary transportation to the studio after school. "We are very excited to be working with Julie Rohr Academy," Boyas explains. "We have very similar philosophies about teaching and smaller class sizes, so it was a perfect fit!" JRA will also integrate the studio's spacious rooms into their rehearsal schedules for their shows as part of their curriculum. Pine View currently has a bus that drops students off at SRQ Dance, Inc. as well.

SRQ Dance, Inc. will hold its 1st Annual Recital on June 4th and 5th at The Players Theatre located at 838 North Tamiami Trail. In addition to their award-winning choreography, the night will also welcome featured student vocalists as well as musical theatre performances. Tickets are $16 and can be purchased at SRQ Dance, Inc. at 3303 Bahia Vista Street, or by calling 941-366-4111.

Mid-Year Student Evaluations Have Begun!!!

Mid-Year Student Evaluations were held today for our younger two levels in our Professional Classes. The class consisted of a basic barre, petit allegro in center, and floor crossings in ballet, and floor crossings and combination in jazz. None of the material covered this evening was previously disclosed to give all of the dancers a level playing field. Mid-Year dance evaluations are broken into two sections: Classroom decorum and Physiological development.

At the conclusion of the class, all students were given a blank copy of the SRQ Dance, Inc. Student Evaluation Form to take home and assess themselves. These will be returned in January when we return from Winter Break, and at that time we can set up conferences as necessary to further evaluate each student's personal development.

Students who were absent from today's evaluation will be expected to attend the evaluation in January for the remaining levels, where a modified syllabus will be administered to evaluate the dancers.
